Play Written Exclusively for UCO Students Examines Illegal Immigration
November 5 , 2007
The University of Central Oklahoma's Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Arts will present "Conviction," a play about illegal immigration
written exclusively for UCO theatre students, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 through 17 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 18 in UCO's Mitchell Hall Theater.
Written by UCO graduate Elford Alley, the play is loosely based on the
experiences of a former UCO faculty member's relative who goes to prison for violating the civil rights of a convicted people smuggler.
The drama examines what happens to the man after he is released from
prison and the struggles he has with what actions to take against the
man he feels put him away.
"This play couldn't be more fitting, what with the new immigration law
in Oklahoma," said Bob McGill, UCO theatre chairman and director of the play.
"Our playwright did a masterful job of examining all sides of the issue without coming to any conclusions. We think the audience will find it to be very thought provoking."
Following the opening night of the production, the audience is invited to stay for a panel discussion with Dr. Diana Pardo of the UCO Department of Modern Languages, and UCO Professor Patti Loughlin, a tri-chair of the American Democracy Project.
"The panel discussion promises to be an opportunity for lively exchange and civic engagement," said Loughlin.
Admission to the play is $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $4 for UCO students. All students, including high school students, will get in free on Nov. 16 if they present proper identification.
