UCO to Stage "La Perichole"

February 15, 2008

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present Jacques Offenbach's comic operetta, "La Perichole," at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28-March 1 and at 2 p.m. March 2 in Mitchell Hall Theater.

"La Perichole" is a French operetta that premiered in Paris in 1868 and is set in 18th century Peru. It centers on the poor street singer Perichole and her partner Piquillo. They want to get married, but can't afford a marriage license. Perichole grows so hungry that she agrees to be one of the viceroy's ladies-in-waiting, aware that the decision means serving as his lover.

Piquillo flies into a rage and ends up in jail. But in the tradition of all comic opera, the grand finale reunites the two.

"'La Perichole' offers a great opportunity to those who have not yet experienced opera," said Daisy Bristow, show director. "It's fast-paced, bawdy and farcical and includes a variety of roles with vocally challenging music, including the 'Tipsy Waltz' and the 'Letter Song,'"

Tickets to the show are $12 for adults, $8 for Senior Citizens and $4 for UCO students.
