UCO's "Metamorphoses" to be Performed in, around Onstage Water Pool
April 11, 2008
The University of Central Oklahoma's Department of Theatre, Dance and Media arts will present "Metamorphoses," a play that takes place in a pool of water with the audience members seated on stage rather than in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m., April 24-26 and at 2 p.m., April 27 at Mitchell Hall Theater.
Based on the legendary tales of Ovid, the play mixes elements of music, play and dance to tell a tale of universal transformation through Greek mythology.
Written by Mary Zimmerman, the Tony award-winning script has been hailed for its ability to mix ancient tragedy and pathos with contemporary language, humor and thought.
"'Metamorphoses' is a very exciting show in so many ways. Visually, it's absolutely beautiful. Everything from the lighting, to the use of silhouettes, to the virtual thunderstorm," said Daisy Bristow, UCO theatre professor and show director.
"We have 10 incredible actors who each morph into different gods and goddesses throughout the story. What's amazing is that the audience will be right there on the stage rather than in the main floor seats so they will really get to experience the show from an interesting perspective."
Technical Director Chris Domanski, said staging a play based around water has presented many challenges.
"There are so many elements involved. The actors are in a foot of water that has to be filtered and heated. In addition, we've crafted a 12 foot tall chandelier that rains," said Domanski.
Adding to the uniqueness of the production will be musicians who will sit among the audience performing on flutes and drums to give the show a primitive Greek sound.
"It will be a very interactive experience," said Domanski.
Tickets to the show are $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $4 for UCO students and $7 for non-UCO students and children.
Since seating for the show is limited, reservations are strongly recommended. This show is for mature audiences only.
