UCO First in State to Offer Summer Graphic Design Outreach Program for High School Students
April 3, 2008
The University of Central Oklahoma's College of Arts, Media & Design will host a Summer Design Workshop for high school students interested in learning more about graphic design, July 7-18, on the university's campus.
Supported by the Oklahoma Center for Arts Education (OCAE), the two-week workshop is the first of its kind in Oklahoma and will give high school juniors and seniors considering a career in graphic design the opportunity to work on projects with design professors and interact with design professionals.
"Design is a very misunderstood profession. Most people do not know how we differ from fine art and almost never realize the creative problem-solving nature of the discipline," said Ruki Ravikumar, UCO Design Outreach director.
"Our goal is to help high school juniors and seniors who are thinking about studying design in college the chance to better understand the profession of graphic design so that they can make informed choices when they do decide on a major."
The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the UCO Art and Design building. Registration is $250 per student, and space is limited. Materials will be provided, but students are responsible for their own lunches.
Among the UCO faculty who will lend their expertise and experience to workshop activities are award-winning design professor Amy Johnson and Department of Design Chair Larry Hefner.
For more information or to register, contact Ravikumar at (405) 974-5210 or OCAE program manager Ines Burnham at (405) 216-2588.
