UCO Set to Stage "Pillowman"

(Mature Audiences Only)

September 7 , 2007

The Department of Theatre, Dance & Media Arts at the University of Central Oklahoma will be staging “Pillowman,” Martin McDonagh’s chilling drama about the extremes of human experience, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20-22, and at 2 p.m. Sept. 23 in Mitchell Hall Theater on the UCO campus.

The drama centers on Katurian, a fiction writer who is interrogated about a series of gruesome child killings that match some of his short stories. Woven together in a rich tapestry with these revelations is information about the lives and motivations of the detectives who are doing the questioning, and the writer’s mentally deranged brother, who becomes central to the investigation.

Bob McGill, chair of the UCO Theatre Department said he is aware that the play will be a demanding experience for the audience, but that students felt “Pillowman” is an important work to produce.

“This award-winning play was chosen for production as part of the vast repertoire of classic and modern genres and styles that our students expect to become familiar with as part of a rounded education,” said McGill.

“Our modern theatre, reflecting the evident violence of our own time, cannot shy away from similar portraits of evil if it is to truly hold a mirror up to life.”

This play contains vivid language and dark themes and is for mature audiences only.

Tickets to the play are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for non-UCO students and $4 for UCO students, and can be purchased by calling the UCO box office at (405) 974-3375.
