UCO to Host Prestigious Visiting Artist
October 26, 2006
The University Of Central Oklahoma College Of Arts, Media & Design will host award-winning metalsmith Andy Cooperman for a three-day, hands-on workshop and public lecture Nov 1-3.

The event is partially funded by a grant from the Society of North American Goldsmiths Workshop. The group awards just two grants per year to universities.
The Seattle-based Cooperman is well known for his use of non-traditional materials in his contemporary rings, brooches and necklaces.
He has exhibited in the United States and Europe and numerous books and magazines, including American Jeweler, American Style and Artisan Northwest, have featured his work.
Assistant professor of jewelry and metalsmithing Charleen Weidell, who wrote the grant to bring Cooperman to the
Edmond campus, said his work has a “Medusa,” a woven ball of sterling,
timeless quality to it. 18k gold and diamonds
“His work is very contemporary, but it’s reminiscent of older scientific investigation. The surfaces have an antiquated look that harkens back to another time period,” said Weidell.
Cooperman’s free public lecture will be held at 6 p.m. Nov 1 in room 115 of the Education Building on the west side of the UCO Campus.
