The University of Central Oklahoma Jazz Lab will present a concert by Grammy Award-winning alto saxophone player Phil Woods at 8 p.m. May 19 at the UCO Jazz Lab at 5th and Littler in Edmond.

Woods, considered by many as the best jazz alto saxophone player of all-time, has composed more than 200 songs, instrumental pieces and arrangements, and has been featured on numerous movie scores.

He has performed with such greats as Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Thelonious Monk, George Russell and George Wallington.

Woods has won Grammys for his recordings of IMAGES with Michel Legrand in 1976, The Phil Woods Six: Live from the Showboat in 1977, More Live by The Phil Woods Quartet in 1982 and At The Vanguard by The Phil Woods Quartet in 1983.

“It is a real pleasure to have such a talented and celebrated artist as Phil Woods playing here at Jazz Lab,” said Jazz Lab Director Lee Rucker.

“Audiences will really enjoy this night with one of the most cutting-edge and recognizable sounds in jazz.”

Woods also will present an informal workshop/Q&A session on either Friday or Saturday afternoon with details to be announced on the Jazz Lab website at www.ucojazzlab.com. This event will be free to the public.

Tickets to the performance are $35 and may be purchased at the Jazz Lab box office or by calling (405) 359-7989. Reservations are strongly recommended.
