UCO students develop traveling gallery
May 1 , 2006
Students studying art and design at the University of Central Oklahoma will display their portable traveling gallery, ArtCoach, from 5 to 9 p.m. May 4, on the street in front of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
Students designed the ArtCoach as part of the final project for UCO’s Three-Dimensional art class, drawing inspiration from mixed media artist Marcel Duchamp’s art boxes.
The traveling gallery is essentially a large box that fits in the bed of a small pickup truck. It features cubbies that are used for displaying smaller, individual projects crafted by students throughout the semester.
Students also can fit two large cardboard chairs in the truck that were made for the same art class.
UCO Art Professor Narciso Arguelles said he teaches his students the basics in 3-D design to give them a foundation to continue in multiple areas of art, whether it is in sculpture, interior design, or art education.
“The students were to use all the elements and principles of 3-D design, incorporating space, line, form, light, color, texture and time, using both traditional and non-traditional sources,” said Arguelles. “I think what they came up with is quite unique.”
The students’ exhibit of ArtCoach coincides with the opening night of the Museum of Art’s “Cocktails on the Skyline.”.
