UCO to Host Rare Performance by Contemporary Dance Company

The University of Central Oklahoma’s College of Arts, Media & Design will kick off its “Super Saturdays of Dance” by featuring the modern dance company, Janice Garrett & Dancers, on Sat. Sept. 9. The company will offer a master class and informal performance to follow the class.

The San Francisco based group was formed by artistic director Janice Garrett, who has been a dance artist and independent choreographer for more than 25 years. It has received five nominations for the Isadora Duncan Dance Award and was honored in 2004 as Dance Magazine’s “Twenty Five to Watch.”

UCO’s Director of Dance, Jamie Jacobson, says she met Janice Garrett last fall and immediately started working on a plan to bring the dancers to Oklahoma.

“This will be an extraordinary opportunity for young aspiring dance artists, arts patrons and the Oklahoma community to see this exquisite company,” said Jacobson.
“It’s rare to get a contemporary dance company to come to Oklahoma and they were very gracious to stop here at UCO," added Jacobson.

UCO will feature a community master class by Garrett from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 9 for students ages 12 and up. The class will be held in the HP&E Building located directly behind Mitchell Hall on the UCO Campus.

Tickets are $15 per person and enrollment is limited.

The informal performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall Theater and will be followed by a question and answer session. Tickets for the performance are $10 for adults and $8 for students. A reduced price of $20 will be charged for those attending both the master class and informal performance.
