UCO’S Kaleidoscope Dancers to Present Concert

September 25, 2006

The University of Central Oklahoma Kaleidoscope Dancers will present their first concert of the season, “The Choreography Concert Plus!,” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 through 7 at UCO’s Mitchell Hall Theater.

The concert features the Oklahoma premiere of modern dance pioneer Eleanor King’s signature solo “Air,” as well as new choreography by L.A. hip-hop artist JesseLee Santos and jazz choreographer Adam Parson.

Restaged by visiting guest artist Elizabeth Ahearn, “Air,” a seven-minute piece that is performed in complete silence, was one of several works students studied during the recent UCO summer dance workshop.

“The key to the success of this work is for the performer to execute the movement slowly and smoothly to create the illusion of floating through the space, allowing the body to create pathways through the air," said Tina Kambour, the concert producer.

"The work is more about the air around the dancer than the execution of steps or shapes.”

In addition, the concert will feature the lively tap dance “Johnny One Note,” choreographed by faculty member Karen Clark and performances by two guest dance companies, Perpetual Motion and Competitive Edge.

UCO will also hold a dedication and sculpture unveiling of "Kinetic Air" at 6 p.m. prior to the Oct. 6 performance outside Mitchell Hall Theater. The unveiling and performance will be dedicated to the memory of Hannah McCarty.

McCarty regularly attended the UCO summer dance workshops. She passed away at age 16.
