UCO Presents Chamber Orchestra Concert at the Jazz Lab

October 30, 2006

The University of Central Oklahoma’s School Of Music will present the UCO Chamber Orchestra in Concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the UCO Jazz Lab.

Led by UCO professor Dr. Hong Zhu, the student comprised orchestra will be performing a variety of works, both classic and contemporary, including pieces by UCO faculty members Sam Magrill and Thomas McCullough, and will also feature guest violinist Scott Conklin.

One work being performed, Pursued by Stephen Lias, was originally commissioned by the Louisiana Sinfonietta and was a finalist in a competition sponsored by the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin. Pursued premiered in Moscow in January 2006 and was recently performed by the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin at New York City`s Carnegie Hall.

Lias, who has composed original music for more than 30 professional theatrical productions, said that this short work incorporates some techniques common to film music and is generally evocative of the music of Bernard Herrmann.

Other works featured in the Chamber Orchestra concert include the Tango Cellito by Magrill and Winter Solstice by McCullough.

This concert is free and open to the public.
