UCO School of Music schedules week of spring concerts

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will wrap up its spring semester with a series of concerts April 22 through 25 at the university’s Mitchell Hall Theater.

The UCO Choral Society, which includes the Concert Chorale, Cantilena, and Edmond Community Chorale, will team-up with the Midwest Choral Society for the UCO Choral Masterworks Concert at 7:30 p.m. on April 22. This performance will feature “Missa Choralis” by Franz Liszt, a 19th century composer famous for his piano works.

The performance is being coordinated by Brian Martin and will be conducted by Dr. Lon Dehnert, director of Choral Studies at UCO.

The UCO Percussion Consort, made up of percussionists and guests from the School of Music, will be in concert at 7:30 p.m., April 23. Conducted by David Hardman, director of Percussion Studies, the Consort will perform a program of modern music written or adapted for percussion instruments.

The UCO Symphony and Chamber Orchestra Concert will perform at 7:30 p.m., April 25. The Chamber Orchestra will perform during the first half of the program under the direction of Tess Remy-Schumacher.

The Symphony portion of the program will feature two student soloists chosen to perform through competition. Senior vocalist Rebecca Teeters will perform the first movement of Mozart’s “Jubilate Exultate,” and senior trombonist Russell Sharp will perform two movements of Ferdinand David’s “Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra.” The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony #5 in c minor, one of the landmark works in orchestral literature.
