UCO to Present ‘The Adding Machine’
February 2 , 2007
The University of Central Oklahoma`s Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Arts will present "The Adding Machine," by Elmer Rice, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 through 17 and at 2 p.m. Feb. 18, in UCO`s Mitchell Hall Theater.
Written in 1923, "The Adding Machine" is generally considered to be the first American Expressionist play and has influenced playwrights such as Tennessee Williams. The play was later adapted to film in 1969.
Described as an unconventional American masterpiece, the play darkly mocks the dawn of the modern business empire in the 1930s, when automation left many people without jobs.
"I believe that `The Adding Machine` will Callie Kays (left) plays Daisy Devore
resonate with our audience, perhaps even and Rick Foresee plays Mr. Zero
more than it did with the audience then,"
said Donald Bristow, UCO theatre professor.
"In this technological age, human beings seem to be even more distant from one another as they spend more and more time communicating with computer-generated games, voices and characters.”
Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $4 for UCO students.
