UCO's Holiday Concerts to Feature Traditional and Contemporary Favorites

November 15, 2006

Festive tunes will fill the air as the University of Central Oklahoma’s School of Music presents a variety of holiday concerts.

The School of Music will kick off the season with the UCO Holiday Choral Concert, featuring performances by UCO's Vocal and Trumpet choirs at 4:00 p.m. Dec. 10, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help In Oklahoma City.

The program will include favorites such as “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” as well as a medley of “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Deck the Halls” and “Frosty the Snow Man.”

The audience will get the opportunity to sing along with well-known carols and enjoy a visit from a special guest from the North Pole.

The UCO Symphony Orchestra will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in Mitchell Hall Theater.

This concert will feature selections from Benjamin Britten’s Symphonic suite “Gloriana,” Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera “Hansel and Gretel,” and an original composition from well-known Oklahoma composer and UCO School of Music Interim Director, Jerry Neil Smith.

Meanwhile, the UCO Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will present “Festive Spirits of the Season,” at 8:00 p.m. Dec. 7, in Mitchell Hall Theater. This concert will follow the annual WinterGlow activities.

This concert will offer several seasonal offerings, from Howard Hanson’s “Dies Natalis,” a centuries-old Swedish Christmas hymn orchestrated for wind instruments, to contemporary works such as Donald Grantham’s “Phantasticke Spirites.”

Finally, UCO’s Division of Music Theatre will present its popular annual revue, "Tinsel Tunes," at 8 p.m. Dec. 7 through 9 and Dec. 14 through 16, at the UCO Jazz Lab.

"Tinsel Tunes" will offer a toe-tapping collection of favorite seasonal tunes, with traditional works and contemporary pop standards from Celine Dion, Josh Groban and Gloria Estefan. Theses shows always sell out quickly, so reservations are strongly recommended.

For tickets to the events at Mitchell Hall, call the box office at (405) 974-3375. For tickets to “Tinsel Tunes,” call the UCO Jazz Lab at (405) 359-7989.
