Thomas Mangus

Tom Mangus teaches brass techniques, brass literature, brass pedagogy, fundamentals of music, applied French horn, and performs with the faculty brass quintet and faculty woodwind quintet. He earned his bachelor of music education and masters in music education from the University of Central Oklahoma where he studied French horn with Dr. Mel Lee.  He has retired from public school teaching after 31 years, the last nine years at Mustang High School as the band director. He taught concert, marching, and jazz band at Big Cabin, Maud, Crescent, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Miami, and Mustang. He also taught lessons on all brass instruments.

Tom plays French horn professionally, presently a member of the Cimarron Woodwind Quintet. He has performed with the Springfield Symphony, Lawton Philharmonic, the now called Signature Symphony in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lyric Theatre, traveling Broadway musical Oklahoma, and many recording sessions in the city area. He has served as adjudicator and clinician in Oklahoma and all surrounding states at district and state concert, marching, and jazz band contests. He also has judged extensively in solo and ensemble contests. 

He is a member of Oklahoma Bandmasters Association, Oklahoma Music Educators Association (chairman of Allstate Band in 1997), Oklahoma Education Association, Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in college. He has served as president of the Northeastern Oklahoma Band Directors and Central Oklahoma Band Directors Associations. He is married to Jennifer, who also teaches, and has two boys, Greg and Drew, both working on degrees in music education.
