Dr. Karen Carter

Dr. Karen Carter, Professor of Music and Coordinator of Undergraduate Music and Music Education Studies, came to UCO in 1991.  Before 1991, she taught in the Stillwater Public School system (grades K-12) for three years, and taught music at Oklahoma State University for fifteen years.  She holds the Ph.D. in music education from the University of Oklahoma; her bachelor and master degrees in music education are from Oklahoma State University.

Since coming to UCO, Dr. Carter has served as Assistant Chairperson of the Music Department, Chairperson of the Music Department, and Assistant/Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Media & Design (for a total of ten years in administrative positions while also teaching).  She returned to the classroom full-time in the Fall of 2005.

Memberships include the Music Educators National Conference, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, Sigma Alpha Iota, Phi Kappa Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Tau Beta Sigma (honorary member).  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Chopin Society, the Oklahoma Center for Arts Education, and the United Methodist Wesley Foundation.

She frequently gives elementary music workshops in Oklahoma and surrounding states, and accompanies several music faculty concerts each semester.
