religious, and political influences on the creation of the
arts of Africa. Arts from West Africa south of the Sahara
from Western Nigeria to Guinea are discussed in relation to
stylistic and functional similarities and differences.
Central African Art explores the social, religious, and political
influences on the creation of the arts of Africa. Arts from
Central Africa from Eastern Nigeria to South Africa are discussed
in relation to stylistic and functional similarities and differences.
Art by Women explores the visual arts created of women. Periods
covered begin in the Middle Ages and continue to the present.
The social, political, and economic aspects that affected
women artists as well as the changes that have taken place
are studied.
Multicultural Art explores the use of visual symbols in cultures
throughout the world. Forms that have similar meanings as
well as those that express different ideas are discussed.
The relation of symbols to social, religious and political
ideas is explored.
Method of Teaching Art History explores the use of various
software programs used in the electronic delivery of art historical
material. Word processing programs as well as those used for
delivery of material in the classroom and on the internet
are explored.
History and Criticism of Art explores writings about art by
philosophers and critics from the time of the early Greeks
to the present, including the aesthetic ideals of non-European
cultures. This helps in the understanding of the changes that
have taken place in the ideals of art.
Webcourses on specialized subjects are presented in conjunction
with study tours to help students get the most from the tour
experience.
