Studio Art - PAINTING

Painting has traditionally been defined as wet paint on a flat surface, but this definition continues to evolve to include a variety of experimental media and techniques. At the introductory level the painting program works to install a strong foundation in the history and techniques of traditional painting methods. Upper level coursework advocates the personal exploration of non-traditional methodologies and imagery as the students advance. Studio work is supplemented with contemporary theoretical readings, research assignments and art historical lectures relevant to each class’s development.
This intensive program integrates the technical mastery of the material with a strong conceptual core. Students are encouraged to discover their own unique style and personal voice while working within the evolving tradition of “painting” and its growing repertoire of materials and imagery. Group critiques throughout the program aid the student in honing their abilities and ideas and focusing their understanding of their individual vision.
Public Art is a hot button topic in today’s art world and the mural program has been reaching out into the community publicly now for several years. The mural program is unique to Oklahoma as well as the United States. At the completion of the major, students will be prepared to face the fluctuating desires and demanding standards of the global art community.
