Studio Art - FOUNDATIONS PROGRAM

The core curriculum is a comprehensive foundation program in the studio arts. The core is comprised of five fundamental studio courses (drawing I, drawing II, 2-D design, 3-D design, and Color theory), two art history survey courses and sophomore portfolio. The foundations program introduces students to the investigation of visual art practices and theories. These courses prepare students for the study of art by providing an intellectual and studio based framework that supports all art making. Work within the studio courses expose students to a wide range of media and processes where they are able to explore the vocabulary of the visual language in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional projects.
Students develop an interdisciplinary and intermedia approach to research, image making and materials within the context of current and historic culture. The culmination of the foundations program is the sophomore portfolio class. This course serves as a benchmark in terms of portfolio and conceptual development for all upper division courses. Students may then choose to focus in five areas of advanced study; painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry/metalsmithing, or photography.
